1967 Grand cru classé Chateau Giscours France Margaux Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc 0,7 l natural cork 12 vol.% dry red V

Since longer time I eyed this ‘67er Giscours with its mid-shoulder filling level very suspiciously. Is it still drinkable or already gone ? In general a question should be allowed concerning this item. Is it really worth to keep such wines in your .....

2008 Condrieu “les Terroirs” Domaine Francois Merlin France Rhône (Condrieu) Viognier 0,75 l natural cork 13.5 vol.% dry white III

Condrieu is a very small French commune in the Département Rhône. Some dozens of vintners are growing here exclusively the Viognier grape on a little bit more than 100 hectares. Due to this small area the plots for each vintner remain relatively small and therefore the quantities .....

November 22, 2010

(Lucia & Vlad, RO, 10.22.2010)

A day of November with September weather… in Drăgăşani. The below recipe we promised to our friends, “shrimp pasta”, is easy to make and stomach friendly. Moreover, it also has an ingredient specific to the area and which adds extra flavor to the food: leeks.
Below are the ingredients and the way to cook them:
Ingredients:
• 500 gr. raw or pre-boiled shrimps;
• 250 gr penne rigate;
• 1 glass of dry white wine;
• 2 leeks;

(Ingredients are for two famished individuals).

1997 Jacquesson brut – a sparkling symphony …

1997 brut Jacquesson France Champagne Chardonnay (55%), Pinot Noir (45%) 0,75 l natural cork 12 vol.% dry red V

Concerning Champagne I adhere to Napoleon who said: “After I won a battle, I deserve it and after I lost one, I need it !”. In this actual case we only have to replace “battle” with “harvest”. After the last grapes of 2010 have been harvested, we decided that .....

1982 Grand cru classé Château Belgrave France Haut-Médoc Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc 0,75 l natural cork 12 vol.% dry red IV

After all my ramblings about underestimated “side-years” it has been about time to try also a wine out of a celebrated one. So together with friends and after a very nice dinner (with other wines) we have had as a highpoint a BDX, ‘82, .....

1998 Georgia’s Paddock Shiraz, Jasper Hill – “the northern Rhône” of Australia

1998 Georgia’s Paddock Shiraz Jasper Hill Australia Heathcote Shiraz 0,75 l natural cork 15.5 vol.% dry red V

I am a big fan of wines made out of this variety – if they are from the northern Rhône . In the rest of the world producers are defining too often the quality of their shiraz wines by the level of alcohol and viscosity and I am simply .....

1997 Grand Reserva “904″ La Rioja Alta Spain Rioja Tempranillo (90%), Graciano (10%) 0,75 l natural cork 13 vol.% dry red IV

A couple of days ago I read some comments (in different blogs) from vintothek owners, that Spanish wine “is heading south” what means, that it’s becoming more and more difficult to sell growths from the Iberian peninsula. Of course there are some (expensive) exceptions but in .....

Those, who are reading this blog regularly may have already noticed may weakness for authentic, elegant wines – even if or precisely because they are out of an underrated year. As to me 1983 is such a year as well as 1981. .....

German Riesling – “Spätlese” vs “Grosses Gewächs/Erstes Gewächs”

November 5, 2010

05.11.2010
After a longer period of time, when most of the German Riesling wines just bobbed up and down at the international level in recent years more and more are re-entering the international stage and attracting attention again. Not least because of the new classification of first growths like “Grosses Gewächs” and “Erstes Gewächs” (depends on the region). But what exactly is the difference between a normal “Spätlese” and a “Grosses Gewächs/Erstes Gewächs” ? Is this just a marketing strategy to obtain more money for the same wine or is there really a substantially difference ? To gain a small insight .....
