R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia white 1934

Knowing already some (very good) white wines (vintage 1987, 1989, 1990) of Heredia, I have been more than just curious, how this one would be. The birthday of a good friend has been more than a welcome reason to find it out. Are old wines like this really still drinkable or even a pleasure ? In one of my earlier posts I already predicted for the 89er a big potential for a couple of decades more. Knowing this wine now, I want to reinforce that statement. Because this 34er has been simply SUPERNATURAL ! It appears almost .....

For a lot of wine-lovers, Germany is THE “Riesling-country”. Without any doubt, you can find here a lot of the worlds’ most famous and most expensive Riesling-wines. But also Austria offers a very big range of outstanding and famous Riesling. Like this one. Despite of its age of over 11 years, the absolute clear, straw-yellow colour with a soft green hue still appears fresh and young. The bouquet was an object lesson of what means a nice riped Rhine-Riesling-nose. A very complex, almost melting scent like apples, white blooms, honey, caramel and something buttery. Furthermore slight hints of the .....

Chateau Boyd-Cantenac Grand cru classé 1967

May 28, 2010

With old Bordeaux wines it is always a very special affair. In our days the famous and fancy ones are only affordable for billionairs (and therefore more and more counterfeit …) and in addition there are also often different lots of the same wine. In earlier times the merchants were buying selected barrels and bottled them on their own. Because of this, the differences of quality can be quiet relevant. Beside this, nothing is more important than provable perfect storing conditions, to age a wine for decades. So avoid “Challenge cups” and other trophies, which have been kept for years .....

DAVINO Feteasca Neagra 2004

May 27, 2010

20.05.2010
In the end a Feteasca Neagra 2004 from DAVINO with a very intense ruby to garnet red colour, slightly opalescent. The mature nose shows a lot of dark forest fruits, licorice and some hints of new leather. At the palate you can find distinct scents of dried plumbs, a very pronounced dark chocolate flavour, vanilla, blackberries and cigar box (tobbacco). Being round and smooth in the mouth, the wine seemed in the beginning a little bit sweaty. But this problem vanished after some time. Its fine tannins and acidity are giving a solid structure and noble elegance until the .....

d’Arenberg “The Dead Arm” Shiraz 2005

May 26, 2010

27.03.2010
A long time I sneaked around this bottle until I was finally able to “kill”it.”The Dead Arm” is considered to be one of the best Shiraz of Australia (whatever that means …). However, let’s form our own opinion. The first impression is a very “dark” one, because of its incredible deep black-ruby-red color. In front of the opening, I kept the bottle already upright for 4 days, because of a soft turbitity. The nose is surprisingly closed in the beginning, but quite typical for Syrah. Sloes, black pepper, fresh meat, new leather, juniper, bay leaf and also a bit .....

Nachbil Merlot Barrique 2003

May 23, 2010

20.05.2010
One done but still one to go. The 2003 Merlot started out very well. Very healthy and strong red color, with a wonderful first smell-cocktail composed out of red and black forest fruits. In the beginning you can find soft Cassis and also cherry-flavours and after some time, these aromas become even more pronounced. Next to those fruity components also spicy ones like wood and cacao are filling your mouth. The wine is very smooth, round and c conquers every part of the mouth but its fruitiness is not too dominant. An already good integrated acidity and a good .....

Nachbil Shiraz Barrique 2003

May 23, 2010

20.05.2010
Because of my very good impression of the Pinot Noir 2003, I also bought 2003 Merlot and this 2003 Shiraz which showed in the beginning a very nice garnet-red colour with a little brown at the margin. The first smell was closed and a little bit oxidized, but after a few minutes, it showed some typical condiments like dark pepper but not very well structured/delimited. At the palate again some dark pepper but also bitter chocolate paired with a strong and bold acidity. The wine appeared a bit lean until its medium to short aftertaste. Therefore in the end .....

Alphonse Mellot “La Moussière” 2007

May 14, 2010

04.03.2010
Now that we know the juniors’ handwriting, let’s see what the senior’s doing. La Moussière is considered to be one of the best vineyards of the Sancerre-region. And Mellot owns here the monopoly. The wine is vinified in big oak casks and also barriques and shows a light straw-yellow with still some soft green reflection. In the nose very restrained, but clean and without any wooden traces. Honey-melons in interaction with apples and something buttery combined with mineraly notes of rock flour. Not a bad combination, but it seems that the wine doesn’t want to talk to us today. .....

Alphonse Mellot Pouilly-Fumé “par Emanuelle Mellot” 2007

May 12, 2010

04.03.2010
The Loire region with its calcareous soil brings out some of the most appreciated Sauvignon Blancs in the world. But the air got thinner because of countries like New Zealand (if you want fruit – you got it …) and South Africa (if you want more minerality and complexity – give those a shot …). Alphones Mellot (Emanuelle is his daughter)is one of the most popular producers out of this region. 60 % of this wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and the rest in new barriques. After 6 months of ageing it was bottled. It shows a soft .....

Barolo Schiavenza 1998

May 10, 2010

28.02.2010
Barolo – one of the strongest names in the wine business of Italy. Unfortunately and similar to the Burgundy region in France, lights and darks are very close together. Here you can find almost every level of the wine hirarchy. From a “revelation of wine” to very expensive red disappointments. And never mind high prices. They are no safe sign for quality whatsoever. So in the end there is just one possibility to find out more about those wines. You have to try them. The present one showed a clear and ripe, ruby-red colour with a beginning brown .....
