At the 10th December the 9th and last edition for 2011 of Cellartales International WineRoundTable took place at the Lebanese Restaurant “Hanul lui Manuc” in the old center of Bukarest. A splendid place with warm and welcoming people. Chef Mohammed and the crew spoiled us once more with excellent, indigenous food, perfect service and also a closer look into the kitchen. Thanks a lot for that folks ! Who thought that spicy, oriental food is a difficult counterpart for wine was disabused today. First we intended to have a special dish for every wine but the Chef told .....

This time we decided not just to gather a bunch of the usual suspects for a single evening tasting but to extend the event and to enjoy all together in the splendid environment of Hotel Belvedere in Baile Govora over two days of interesting wines an “handmade food”. For the first evening I assembled unusual/underrated growths and paired them with special food and/or served them in unusual conditions like for example well chilled red wine.
We started with homemade Tapas and other small delicacies paired with well chilled, dry Sherry-wines :

CellarTales International Wineroundtable Edition No. 6

July 4, 2011

Better late than never ! The “International WineRoundTable Edition No.7” is already in the planning stage and I haven’t closed so far the last one … Well, we have been extremely busy lately (that’s a good thing) and therefore I let slight a little bit CellarTales and a lot of interesting wines lined up (that’s a bad thing). But I will do my very best to compensate the lost time. So, what we have had for our “International WineRoundTable Edition No.6” ? A very colored tasting with ups and downs, surprises and disappointments and a lot of different .....

1994 Vina Pomal Reserva vs. 1994 Gran Reserva Carlos Serres – an one-eyed next to a blind …

1994 Vina Pomal Reserva Bodega Bilbainas Spain Rioja Tempranillo (85%), Graciano + Mazuelo (15%) 0,75 l natural cork 12 vol.% dry red III

This winery I visited the first time during my study times when we visited several Bodegas in the Rioja region. But this one has been special. In the beginning the majority of our group was quite shocked and disturbed by their old cellars (or better said .....

An “Imperial” annual closure …

January 7, 2011

Finally, so to say on the last day of 2010 we managed to bring enough gourme(n)ts together “to kill” a big bottle which has been since longer time on my radar screen. Of course we have had also a marvellous dinner next to this and as I always say – every good cook needs inspiration. So we got ours from a very nice, traditional Claret and last but not least we learned, that a good year for reds doesn’t necessarily mean a good vintage for whites as well …

“Santa Claus” wine-tasting part II

December 14, 2010

Year: Wine: Producer: Country: Region: Variety(-ies):Size: Closure: Alcohol: Taste: Colour: Group:
— Reserva brut nature Privat Laieta Spain D.O. Cava Chardonnay 0,75 l natural cork 12 vol.% dry white (sparkling) III

I always like to start a wine-tasting with something really elated, stimulating and therefore, if possible, sparkling. For me there’s no better equilibration for one’s palate than with a really dry sparkling wine. To avoid and to prevent boredom I am always on the search for a .....

1997 Gran Reserva “904” La Rioja Alta – underestimated “Spaniards” ?

November 8, 2010

1997 Grand Reserva “904″ La Rioja Alta Spain Rioja Tempranillo (90%), Graciano (10%) 0,75 l natural cork 13 vol.% dry red IV

A couple of days ago I read some comments (in different blogs) from vintothek owners, that Spanish wine “is heading south” what means, that it’s becoming more and more difficult to sell growths from the Iberian peninsula. Of course there are some (expensive) exceptions but in .....

2006 Condado de Haza Crianza, Alejandro Fernandez – nothing to sip …

2006 Condado de Haza Crianza Alejandro Fernandez Spain Ribera del Duero Tempranillo 0,75 l natural cork 14 vol.% dry red III

For today I wanted to have something easier to drink. Something with a nice fruit and a luscious and juicy body. By checking the cellar my eyes remained caught by this very expressive label. A hedonistic Tempranillo ? Yes, that should do the trick ! .....

La Bota de Pedro Ximénez 1/12No.11 – “Madness in a bottle !”

NV La Bota de Pedro Ximénez 1/12 No. 11 Marqués del Real Tesoro Spain Jerez Pedro Ximénez 0,75 l press cork with handle 17 vol.% sweet white IV

Sherry is actually very underrated and unpopular and I really cannot understand why. This kind of wine offers a lot of different styles for even more purposes. From a very dry and fresh Fino (nice chilled a dream with crustaceans) to .....

1999 Pesquera Reserva

August 24, 2010

23.08.2010
Pesquera and other wines of Alejandro Fernandez like Condado de Haza, El Vinculo, Dehesa la Granja etc. can already be called “classics” even if they are a bit more on the modern side of spanish winemaking. In their youth much rounder and smoother than for example a classic Rioja and in addition to that also very fruity – yes – “fleshy”. Fernandez setted up this new style in the Ribera del Duero region first but others followed his example over the years. And as far as I’m concerned I also really like it, but with age, the wines can .....
