At the 10th December the 9th and last edition for 2011 of Cellartales International WineRoundTable took place at the Lebanese Restaurant “Hanul lui Manuc” in the old center of Bukarest. A splendid place with warm and welcoming people. Chef Mohammed and the crew spoiled us once more with excellent, indigenous food, perfect service and also a closer look into the kitchen. Thanks a lot for that folks ! Who thought that spicy, oriental food is a difficult counterpart for wine was disabused today. First we intended to have a special dish for every wine but the Chef told .....

Better late than never ! The “International WineRoundTable Edition No.7” is already in the planning stage and I haven’t closed so far the last one … Well, we have been extremely busy lately (that’s a good thing) and therefore I let slight a little bit CellarTales and a lot of interesting wines lined up (that’s a bad thing). But I will do my very best to compensate the lost time. So, what we have had for our “International WineRoundTable Edition No.6” ? A very colored tasting with ups and downs, surprises and disappointments and a lot of different .....

An “Imperial” annual closure …

Finally, so to say on the last day of 2010 we managed to bring enough gourme(n)ts together “to kill” a big bottle which has been since longer time on my radar screen. Of course we have had also a marvellous dinner next to this and as I always say – every good cook needs inspiration. So we got ours from a very nice, traditional Claret and last but not least we learned, that a good year for reds doesn’t necessarily mean a good vintage for whites as well …

Pesquera and other wines of Alejandro Fernandez like Condado de Haza, El Vinculo, Dehesa la Granja etc. can already be called “classics” even if they are a bit more on the modern side of spanish winemaking. In their youth much rounder and smoother than for example a classic Rioja and in addition to that also very fruity – yes – “fleshy”. Fernandez setted up this new style in the Ribera del Duero region first but others followed his example over the years. And as far as I’m concerned I also really like it, but with age, the wines can .....

For me, South Africa is the most interesting “New World” wine country (at least so far). Although it seems ridicolous to me to call a country, where they are making already over 350 years wine the “New World”. Anyway. Here you still can find exceptional qualities and wine styles for very reasonable prices. Still. Because at least for the high qualities, this is going to be changed with seven-league boots. This wine for example increased its price for almost almost 60 % – within one year !!! So let’s hurry up a bit ! Already by pouring .....

Campillo Reserva 1995

Campillo is the premium brand of the family estate Faustino. This Reserva posses a bright, young ruby-red, absolutely clear and with a fine depot. Its bouquet offers again nice, classic pure Rioja. But this time, brown spices like ceddar-wood, vanilla and cinnamon are dominating. Also its straight acidity and its still very notable tannins may frighten an unprepared tongue. This one needs urgently to be aerated. It is still young but also following a different style. What counts here is elegance and finesse. Although the winery gives just aged wine to the market, they still hold a big ageing .....
