At the 10th December the 9th and last edition for 2011 of Cellartales International WineRoundTable took place at the Lebanese Restaurant “Hanul lui Manuc” in the old center of Bukarest. A splendid place with warm and welcoming people. Chef Mohammed and the crew spoiled us once more with excellent, indigenous food, perfect service and also a closer look into the kitchen. Thanks a lot for that folks ! Who thought that spicy, oriental food is a difficult counterpart for wine was disabused today. First we intended to have a special dish for every wine but the Chef told .....

Better late than never ! The “International WineRoundTable Edition No.7” is already in the planning stage and I haven’t closed so far the last one … Well, we have been extremely busy lately (that’s a good thing) and therefore I let slight a little bit CellarTales and a lot of interesting wines lined up (that’s a bad thing). But I will do my very best to compensate the lost time. So, what we have had for our “International WineRoundTable Edition No.6” ? A very colored tasting with ups and downs, surprises and disappointments and a lot of different .....

1991 Vina Tondonia Reserva (white) Lopez de Heredia Spain Rioja Viura (90%), Malvasia (10%) 0,75 l natural cork 12 vol.% dry white III

Inspired by the last wine-tasting (Coulée de Serrant) I wanted urgently to verify my latest statement concerning the similarities of those two classic whites. To stay at least in the same decade I chose a ‘91er, their actual vintage on the market … ! Of .....

Herencia de Remondo Reserva 1995

March 11, 2010

A very fine vintage for Riojas. This one shows an absolutely clear purple red with soft red-brown tints at the margin. Its nose appears still very young and rich, but typical Rioja. Plums, orange-peel, cacao, some bananas, new leather and forest floor. After some aeration it develops almost a pinot-noir-style with redberries, earthy aromas and soft hints of pieplant – great. At the palate we find a similar impression. A vibrant acidity in combination with fine-grained, lively tannins imparts juvenility and make it hard to believe, that this wine is already 15 years old. Its very well structured and .....

Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 1989 (Early Release)

March 10, 2010

Ok, I admit it. This Ygay stuff is touching me, but it is easy to explain why. It was one of the first wines, I started my private collection with. Over the years I have had it over 30 times in my glass and it was never, never a disappointment. But let’s see today. Strong and clean purple red with a soft brown-red hue at the margin. In the beginning a bit closed bouquet but with some time of breathing developing a classic Rioja-nose. A lot of orange-peel, coriander, cardamom, and old, smooth leather. The wine’s more spicy than fruity .....

Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2001 (Early Release)

March 5, 2010

Deepest, garnet-ruby-red, very clear. In the beginning a little closed with a soft airy smell (like brown apple) and some bitter almonds. After a while red fruits like sour cherries and again this typical Rioja characteristic (Oranges). In the mouth strong but fine tannins and very well structured with a stabile acidity. It develops an enormous pressure at the palate and shows also a good aftertaste. The usual suspects are rating this wine (and vintage) already very, very high (hedonistique stuff). Nonetheless I have always had the impression that this wine was fighting against being already consumed – .....

The indigenous variety Albarino is one of the most celebrated spanish white-wine stars – especially from this producer. Its fruity and light-bodied character fits perfectly to spring and summer dishes. The present one has a light and shiny yellow colour .....
